Rokkatei is a confectionery in Obihiro city, Hokkaido, has been producing a lot of popular omiyage.
“Daiheigen” (”Great Plain” in Japanese) is a long-seller item since 1963. The packaging design is quite impressive, reminding us of the great plains at dusk in the North island, Hokkaido.
Confections by Rokkatei give us images of local lives and traditions of the north region. “Daiheigen” is one of them, allowing us to imagine the farm life in Obihiro.
This madeleine cake includes ingredients from the island such as butter.
When I opened the box, aroma of butter drifted out. It’s a simple yet wonderful cake, soft and moist with a strong butter flavor.
The moderate sweetness and the butter’s mild aftertaste is simply irresistible.
There actually is a even better way to have it. The maker suggests to microwave it for about 10 seconds before eating it. Surely enough, a stronger butter flavor came out, making the cake more fluffy as well but becomes hard after cooling.
Rokkatei also produces a smaller madeleine called “Menkoi Daiheigen“.
